A little background

This 100% Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is finished in Margaux barrels. Ten percent of the rye in this spirit is malted. Coalition’s rye whiskey spends five years in American white oak barrels before it is finished in Bordeaux wine barrels (up to nine months). Coalition Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Margaux Barriques is bottled at 90.8 proof and MSRP is approximately $90.

Nose

Ethanol is initially present on the nose. This note is followed by young oak and floral notes. A perfume-like sweetness is also present.

Palate

The first sip is overly sweet with a punch of spice. Oak is the most prominent note. The second sip reveals a medium viscosity and slight acidity. Notes of oak and spice envelope the palate. Cracked black pepper and fermented grapes begin to appear in the third sip.

Finish

The finish is medium and spicy. Oak and spice are the most prominent notes. Notes of black pepper begin to emerge as the finish fades.

In closing

Coalition Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Margaux Barriques is unique. This spirit has a perfume-like nose. Notes of oak, black pepper, and spice remain constant throughout the tasting experience. This is an interesting pour that may not please every palate. Those who enjoy oak and spice would enjoy this bottle. However, those who prefer baking spice, clove, and cinnamon notes from a rye whiskey may want to consider another bottle.
