One Standard. Every Reviewer. Every Bottle.

Whiskey Consensus was founded in 2017 by Matthew Evans with one goal: to review whiskey the same way every time. Over the years, a community of contributors has helped build the library into what it is today — but the methodology has never changed.

Every review scores five categories independently: Nose, Palate, Finish, Complexity, and Value. The five scores are averaged to a 0–10 overall rating, making every review directly comparable across the entire library — whether it was published in 2017 or last week. No brand relationships, no paid placements, no shortcuts.

Today, community consensus is live. Every bottle in the library now carries a Consensus Score alongside the expert rating — anonymous, crowd-sourced, and growing with every visitor who rates a bottle. The most complete whiskey scoring platform on the web.

The Scoring System

Nose Aroma, complexity on the pour
Palate Flavor development, texture, balance
Finish Length, warmth, lingering notes
Complexity Layering, evolution in the glass
Value Quality relative to price
Each category scored 0–100, averaged to a 0–10 overall. A score of 9.0+ indicates an exceptional bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Whiskey Consensus?+
Whiskey Consensus is an independent whiskey review platform founded in 2017 by Matthew Evans. Every bottle is scored across five categories — Nose, Palate, Finish, Complexity, and Value — on a consistent 0–100 scale, applied by a single reviewer across every published review. Coverage includes bourbon, rye, Tennessee whiskey, Scotch, Irish, Japanese, Canadian, and American single malt.
How is each whiskey scored?+
Every review scores five categories independently: Nose, Palate, Finish, Complexity, and Value. Each is scored 0–100, and the five scores are averaged to produce an overall 0–10 rating. This consistent methodology makes every review directly comparable across the entire library.
Is Whiskey Consensus affiliated with any brands?+
No. Whiskey Consensus is independently operated. Reviews reflect honest opinions and are never influenced by brands, distributors, or paid arrangements. Scores are never adjusted for commercial reasons.
What whiskey styles do you cover?+
The review library covers all major whiskey styles with particular depth in American whiskey — bourbon and rye in particular. Scotch, Irish, Japanese, Canadian, Tennessee, and American single malt are also well represented. Use the reviews index to filter by style.
