One Standard. Every Reviewer. Every Bottle.

Whiskey Consensus was founded in 2017 by Matthew Evans with one goal: to review whiskey the same way every time. Over the years, a community of contributors has helped build the library into what it is today — but the methodology has never changed.

Every review scores five categories independently: Nose, Palate, Finish, Complexity, and Value. The five scores are averaged to a 0–10 overall rating, making every review directly comparable across the entire library — whether it was published in 2017 or last week. No brand relationships, no paid placements, no shortcuts.

That consistent methodology is also what makes the Whiskey Genius possible. Because every score follows the same structure, the AI can reason across the full library and make genuinely meaningful comparisons — not just keyword matches.

The next step is community consensus — pairing expert scores with crowd-sourced ratings to build the most complete whiskey scoring platform on the web. Stay tuned.

The Scoring System

Nose Aroma, complexity on the pour
Palate Flavor development, texture, balance
Finish Length, warmth, lingering notes
Complexity Layering, evolution in the glass
Value Quality relative to price
Each category scored 0–100, averaged to a 0–10 overall. A score of 9.0+ indicates an exceptional bottle.
