James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey

A little background

The Pepper name is nothing new to the bourbon industry and has been producing Kentucky whiskey from the American Revolution up through the 1950’s. Over a half a century later the brand has been brought back to life and is bottling whiskey as James E. Pepper Distilling Co. According to their website, “to initiate the relaunch of the brand, partnerships with existing distilleries were formed. Today the whiskey sold under the 1776 line of whiskeys was distilled years ago in collaboration with the historic Lawrenceburg Distillery in Indiana. This review is of the James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It’s unfiltered and has a retail price of $30.

Color

Dark Amber

Nose

Slight alcohol burn, but about what you’d expect for a 100 proof bourbon. Classic bourbon notes of caramel and vanilla, with a hint of lime and cherry fruit notes.

Palate

This whiskey is sweet on the palate. Nutty, both peanuts and almonds. Much like peanut brittle with caramel and burnt sugar notes. More subtle notes of cherry and oak.

Finish

The finish is relatively short but flavorful and rich up until the end. Continued sweet flavors from the palate linger around, along with dusty cinnamon and smoky notes.

In closing

James E. Pepper Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a very enjoyable bourbon that’s got a delicious palate and flavor profile. The nutty notes and caramel stand out the most and made for a very tasty sipping experience. Although short lived, the finish is flavorful and rich. At $30 this is a very well priced bourbon and one I’d personally enjoy having on my shelf and sharing with friends.
