Bushido Whisky Rei Pure Malt Japanese Whisky

A little background

Kumesen Syuzo Distillery was founded in 1942. During this time, they were producing a rice-based spirit that was indigenous to the Okinawa Islands of Japan. This is their version of a single malt whisky, which was aged in oak barrels. There is not a whole lot of information available about this spirit, so we will have to go based on the flavors alone. The suggested retail price of Bushido Whisky Rei Pure Malt Japanese Whisky is $99, has no age statement and is bottled at 80 proof.

(Tasted neat from a Halo Glass)

Color

Yellow Straw

Nose

Light sweet notes of salted caramel, corn, pineapple and malt.

Palate

The mouthfeel is relatively thin, which given the low proof, that’s not surprising. Notes of malt, pineapple, and black pepper are present on the mid palate. The flavor profile is very light and fresh.

Finish

The finish on this whisky is on the shorter end of the spectrum. Enjoyable malt, pineapple and black pepper notes carry through from the palate onto the finish.

In closing

Unfortunately, there simply isn’t a whole lot of low priced Japanese Whiskies on the market today. Bushido Rei Pure Malt has some enjoyable qualities, however, it’s really lacking complexity and body. Although this isn’t a bad whisky by any means,  it is pretty one dimensional. With a $100 price tag I would expect a bit more, however, it’s a good example of an entry level Japanese whisky and something I hope we see more of in the years to come!
