FEW Rye Whiskey

A little background

FEW Rye from the FEW Distillery out of Evanston, IL has “the generous rye content married with the sweetness of corn for a genteel interpretation of the venerable spirit.” (their words not mine).  This is a NAS whiskey bottled at 93 Proof and a retail price of around $55.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)

Color

Medium Gold

Nose

Dusty straw, eucalyptus, citrus peel, and fresh cut grass.

Palate

Sweet citrus leads the way, with the herbal eucalyptus and vanilla following.

Finish

Herbaceous notes continue but fade safely quickly, I believe with some more age the finish can match the nose and palate.

In closing

After trying both the bourbon and the rye from FEW, I must say, this rye was my favorite of the two expressions. If I could only buy one, it would be the rye whiskey.  It has an herbal quality that is both pleasing and interesting. Unfortunately, the finish just doesn’t have much presence and falls off too quickly.
