A little background
Few names in American whiskey carry the weight of history that Michter’s does. With roots tracing back to 1753, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded a distillery in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, Michter’s is proud to call itself the nation’s first whiskey company. In its early days, the distillery, then known as Shenk’s, produced rye whiskey from locally grown grain, and legend has it that George Washington himself procured barrels to warm and fortify his troops during the bitter winter at Valley Forge. Over the centuries, the distillery passed through various owners and names, including Bomberger’s, before eventually adopting the Michter’s moniker in the mid-20th century.
The road to modern success was anything but smooth. Like much of the American whiskey industry, Michter’s struggled during Prohibition, endured decades of financial instability, and eventually declared bankruptcy in 1989, leaving its Pennsylvania distillery shuttered. The brand’s revival came in the 1990s, thanks to Joseph J. Magliocco and industry veteran Richard “Dick” Newman, who resurrected Michter’s in Kentucky with a philosophy centered on uncompromising quality. By moving production to the heart of bourbon and rye country, they ensured the new Michter’s could access the finest resources and expertise the industry had to offer, while honoring the legacy of the storied Pennsylvania distillery.
Today, Michter’s operates three facilities across Kentucky, including its Shively distillery in Louisville, the Fort Nelson Building downtown, and a 205-acre farm in Springfield. Among its most coveted limited releases is the Michter’s 10 Year Rye Single Barrel, bottled at 92.8 proof (46.4% ABV) and offered each year in small quantities. With an MSRP of around $200, the 2025 release continues the distillery’s mission of producing whiskey that is as carefully crafted as it is deeply rooted in history. This review explores the latest edition of Michter’s 10 Year Rye, an expression that promises elegance, maturity, and a refined balance of sweet and spice.

In closing
2025 Michter’s 10 Year Rye Single Barrel is a truly decadent and approachable rye whiskey. The nose is a complex blend of floral and confectionery notes, with a foundation of warm oak, dark caramel, and stewed apples. On the palate, a silky, medium-to-full body delivers a fruit-forward experience of baked apple, orange citrus, and toffee, beautifully balanced by baking and sweet rye spices. The finish is long and satisfying, with a shift to more chocolate- and spice-forward notes of spiced apples, white pepper, and dark cocoa. While its lower proof might leave some wanting more, it’s precisely this choice that makes it so approachable and allows the elegant flavors to shine. This is a rye for everyone—its subtle spice and wonderful mouthfeel make it an unforgettable pour. If you ever have the chance to try it or buy a bottle, don’t hold back.
