Oak & Eden Fired French Oak Wheat & Spire

A little background

Oak & Eden has set themselves apart by producing uniquely finished whiskey. To create their whiskey, they use a spiral cut piece of oak which is soaked in the finishing product before it is added to the bottle of whiskey. Oak & Eden calls this piece of wood a “Spire”, which will remain in the bottle throughout the life of the whiskey. Oak & Eden’s Fired French Oak Wheat & Spire bourbon starts out as a wheated whiskey with a mash bill of 51% corn, 45% wheat and 4% malted barley. The wheated whiskey is then traditionally aged in a barrel for two years prior to being placed in the bottle with the Fired French Oak Spire. The whiskey is then finished with the addition of a charred 5” spire cut from French Oak. Oak & Eden’s Fired French Oak Wheat & Spire bourbon is bottled at 90 Proof and sold with an MSRP around $45. This review is based on Batch #5 bottle 304.

Color

Amber

Nose

The nose is light with prominent notes of fruit and citrus. Rich notes of oak, char, tobacco come through.

Palate

The first sip brought balanced notes of dried dark fruits that covered the palate. The second sip allowed for the savory flavors to come through such as cherry and almonds. Oaky caramel notes were prominent by the third sip.

Finish

The finish has lingering notes of the fruits and oak that coat smoothly coats the palate.

In closing

Oak & Eden is continually coming up with new innovative ways to finish their whiskey. The pairing of the wheated mash bill and the charred French Oak Spire worked well to create a unique and delish bourbon. If you are someone who enjoys wheated whiskey I would recommend giving this one a try. Plus, it is pretty cool to have a bottle with an oak spire in it sitting on your shelf!
