Penelope Cooper Series Havana Bourbon

A little background

Penelope Bourbon Havana Bourbon is a new addition to their Cooper Series. This expression features a double cask finish: their four-year-old Four Grain Straight Bourbon (74% corn, 7% rye, 16% wheat, 3% malted barley) aged 12 months in Caribbean rum casks, followed by a one-month finish in maple syrup barrels previously used to age Penelope bourbon. Bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV), the Penelope Cooper Series Havana Bourbon is available in a limited release of 4,500 cases at a suggested retail price of $79.99.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Gold

Nose

Apricots, tangerine, cola, brown sugar, maple syrup, sweet lemonade, sugar in the raw, and honey.

Palate

Brown sugar, golden raisins, sweet tea, maple syrup, lemon tea, candy corn, and a Flintstones vitamin note.

Finish

Brown sugar, maple syrup, candy corn, sweet tea, honey, vanilla, and sweet tobacco.

In closing

Penelope Cooper Series Havana Bourbon offers a distinctly sweet and dessert-like profile. Its aromatic nose and rich palate deliver a surge of fruity and sugary notes, from apricots and tangerine to maple syrup and candy corn. While the pronounced sweetness might not appeal to every palate, it provides a unique and enjoyable experience, particularly for those who appreciate a bourbon with a dessert-forward character. The thick, rich mouthfeel and lingering sweetness make it a memorable, if unconventional, whiskey.
