A little background
Dry Fly Distilling, located in Spokane Washington crafted their Straight Triticale Whiskey using a specific seed variety. Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye that was developed in Scotland in the 1800s. Triticale is unique because it will contain the spice that comes from a rye whiskey with the smoother sweet finish of a wheat whiskey. The mashbill is 100% triticale. Dry Fly’s Straight Triticale Whiskey is aged for a minimum of 4 years and carries a MSRP of around $40.

Nose
The nose was unexpected. Notes of roasted coffee, vanilla, oak, and toasted nuts came through. As the whiskey breathed dried fruits such as apricots and plums were able to shine through. It was a refreshing nose of rye spice that eased into an earthy wheat note.
Palate
The whiskey hits the palate with sweet creamy vanilla. The vanilla notes are quickly overtaken by a mild rye spice. Once the rye spice has settled, a refreshing dried apricot taste comes into play. The palate overall is very aromatic with a dried fruity side to her.
Finish
The finished ended with the fruiter notes. A bit of spice on the edges of the palate. The finish was overall a medium finish.
In closing
This whiskey kept my palate guessing, something that I really enjoy. After learning a bit about what the Triticale seed was I was excited to try Dry Fly’s Straight Triticale Whiskey. I was not disappointed when my palate was hit with the spices from the rye and the sweetness you get from the wheat. For the price point of $40, this is a great option to have on the shelf of your home bar. There is a significant amount of flavors that come through as the whiskey breathes and opens up. If you come across this whiskey, I definitely recommend giving it a try.
