Broken Top Bourbon Whiskey

A little background

Broken Top Bourbon is bottled at 87.5 proof and comes in at a retail of around $35. It is distilled by Cascade Street Distillery in Sisters, Oregon, and is unique in that the water used by the company is filtered through volcanic rock. The whiskey is aged 2 years, and the mashbill consists of undisclosed amounts of corn, rye, and barley.

Nose

The nose starts off with flavors of sweet vanilla and bubblegum with accents of corn and allspice throughout. The most prominent note being bubblegum which really ties in nicely with the little bit of spice that is present.

Palate

The palate is sweet with notes of hard candy and bubblegum. The little bit of spice from the nose carries over and provides balance to the sweetness of this whiskey. Overall, I was pleased with how the bubblegum of the nose carried over to the palate.

Finish

The finish is medium to long and has a burn that is full of cinnamon and allspice. A little sweetness comes from the candy and vanilla flavors that were present in the nose. The length and flavors of the finish were very pleasant.

Complexity

The whiskey was unique in both its flavor profile and lasting finish. The bubblegum and cinnamon came together and created a nice blend of flavors that I wanted to go back to.

In Conclusion

I was very surprised at the nice flavors that I got out of this for being a 2 year old whiskey. This could definitely be very enjoyable for someone that likes whiskies with sweeter notes or someone that is a fan of unique flavors. I think this one is worth a try if you are looking for something new and see one on the shelf for $35.
