A little background

Frey Ranch Distillery is a small gem that’s tucked away in the Northern Nevada Lake Tahoe Watershed region. The Frey family has a long legacy of farming in this region, dating back to the mid 1800’s. Not only are they still farming today, but they’re utilizing their crops as the key ingredient in their distilling operation. Frey Ranch Distillery is proud to be the states first and only whiskey producer to grow 100% of their grain on-site. Colby Frey, the CEO and Co-Founder of Frey Ranch Distillery is a self-proclaimed “Whiskey Farmer”, and for good reason! Frey Ranch Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a unique 4-grain mash bill of Non-GMO Corn, Winter Cereal Rye, Winter Wheat, and 2-Row Barley that has been malted on-site. 100% sustainably grown, malted, distilled, matured, and bottled on-site at the Frey Ranch Distillery, making it a true grain to glass operation! Frey Ranch Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at cask strength, aged for over 5 years, and has an MSRP of $85. This review is based on a sample from barrel no. 22, which was bottled at 126.38 Proof.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Auburn

Nose

Dried cherries, caramel, egg custard, nutmeg, cinnamon, honey butter, and plenty of heat.

Palate

Cherry Dr. Pepper, bitter dark chocolate, mocha, chocolate torte, and a touch of maple syrup.

Finish

Hershey’s chocolate, peanuts, and lingering layers of dried cherries, cinnamon, and oak. Slightly drying and very long with beautiful layers of flavor.

In closing

Frey Ranch Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey is impressively complex and well balanced. There are beautiful chocolate components throughout and a wonderfully long finish. This is one of the most delicious craft whiskeys I’ve ever tried and a bottle I’d absolutely recommend buying. Cheers Frey Ranch Distillery, you nailed it with this one and are making great things happen!
