A little background

Belfour spirits is a new company that was founded by Hockey Hall of Famer “Eddie the Eagle” Belfour. The Belfour Rye Whiskey has a mash bill composed of rye, corn, and malted barley. This spirit was aged a minimum of 18 months and is bottled at 94 proof. MSRP is approximately $89.

Color

Medium Amber

Nose

The nose is deep and rich. Notes of toasted marshmallow, sea salt caramel toffee, and vanilla are present. As the spirit opens in the glass, a nice sea salt dark chocolate note begins to appear.

Palate

The first sip has a medium viscosity and a slight warmth that settles in the chest. Young oak, barrel char, and vanilla notes are present. The second sip begins with a burst of smoked caramel and vanilla that transition to a slightly bitter oak note. The third sip reveals a nice rye spice that is accompanied by leather and tobacco notes.

Finish

The finish is medium and slightly acidic, invoking a mouth drying effect. Dark roast coffee, toasted oak, and spice notes are most prominent. As the finish begins to fade, a faint allspice note begins to appear.

In closing

The Belfour Rye Whiskey will entice you with nosing notes of toasted marshmallow and sea salt caramel toffee. This spirit has a medium viscosity that is accompanied by rye spice, smoked vanilla, and young oak. The finish is medium with notes of dark roast coffee and toasted oak. The youth of this whiskey is evident on the palate, however, there seems to be some hidden potential that may appear as this spirit continues to age.
