Hard Truth Barrel Finish Reserve Sweet Mash Rye 2024 Blend

A little background

Hard Truth Barrel Finish Reserve Sweet Mash Rye 2024 Blend is a cask-strength expression from Hard Truth Distilling Co., an Indiana-based producer known for its sweet mash whiskeys and other craft spirits. Building on the success of its individual barrel-finished ryes from the previous year, which included finishes in Cognac, Pedro Ximénez Sherry, Pedro Ximénez Brandy, and Sauternes barrels, this blend combines those components at 31% Cognac, 26% Sauternes, 26% PX Sherry, and 17% PX Brandy, each finished for eight months before being rested on toasted Jupilles French oak. The result is a 3-year-old straight rye whiskey with a mash bill of 94% rye and 6% malted barley, bottled at 116.8 proof, and produced in a limited batch of 11 barrels with an MSRP of $89.99.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

In closing

Hard Truth’s Barrel Finish Reserve Sweet Mash Rye 2024 Blend stands as a testament to the distillery’s growing mastery of bold, expressive whiskey. It is a powerhouse of dark fruit, spice, and oak interplay, offering the kind of layered depth and balance that belies its youthful age. The blend’s cherry, plum, and molasses core is lifted by clove, cinnamon, and a touch of tobacco, evolving beautifully from nose to finish with every sip. While the cask-strength proof introduces some initial heat, a splash of water opens up remarkable complexity and texture. Altogether, this release is both inventive and confident, an exceptional value that reaffirms Hard Truth’s place among the most exciting names in modern American rye.
