This release uses Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. Like all Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and rye expressions, the whiskey undergoes the distillery’s signature charcoal mellowing process before maturation in new charred oak barrels. According to the distillery, Master Distiller Chris Fletcher and his team selected barrels specifically for their high proof and low yield characteristics, highlighting how different barrelhouse environments influence maturation and flavor development. Officially registered in 1866, the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg remains the first registered distillery in the United States and continues to produce some of the most recognized Tennessee whiskey and Tennessee rye whiskey releases in the world

In closing
Jack Daniel’s Special Release Small Batch Rye (2026) stands out as one of the boldest and most distinctive Tennessee rye whiskey releases from the Lynchburg distillery in recent years. Bottled at a massive 142.7 proof from the bottle reviewed here, this limited barrel proof rye delivers an intensely layered profile filled with charred oak, dark cherry, maple syrup, rye spice, leather, tobacco, and baking spice while maintaining an impressively balanced and surprisingly approachable drinking experience for such a high-proof whiskey.
The combination of 10-year maturation, the classic 70% rye mash bill, and barrels sourced from Coy Hill, Boiler Hill, and Fire Brigade Fields creates a deep, complex pour that showcases both the power and richness possible in Tennessee rye whiskey. While the aggressive oak influence and limited availability may keep it from being universally accessible, Jack Daniel’s Special Release Small Batch Rye earns its reputation as a highly collectible and exceptionally flavorful limited edition whiskey that will appeal most to experienced rye and barrel proof whiskey enthusiasts seeking concentrated flavor, long finishes, and standout complexity.
