Experience

Cold Draw

Tobacco sweetness and hay

First third

The initial light up comes with a good amount of black pepper. This is underlaid with cocoa and a caramel sweetness. As the first third progresses the pepper mellows but leave moves to the sides of the tongue. I have found this in many of the cigars that AJ Fernandez has helped to blend.

Second Third

In the second third, the pepper has pretty much subsided. The cocoa comes forward while still having the underlying caramel sweetness. It isn’t so much the flavor of caramel but the sweetness of a caramelized sugar. There is a slight nutty note that lingers on the back end. It’s more of a waxy nut than a peanut.

Final Third

The final third is where I began to be a little let down. To this point the cigar was very solid in the nine range. However, in the final third the pleasant flavors of the rest of the cigar begin to become overshadowed by a bitter note. I attempted a purge and to slow down incase my technique was causing a weird change in the cigar. Alas, this was not the case. The bitter note came to the forefront and remained there through the end.

Strength:

Medium

Pairing:

This cigar would pair well with a Brown-Foreman type bourbon or a dark rum. A liquor of average proof, nothing too high or it will overpower the cigar.

In closing

This cigar was enjoyable up to the final third. Matt Booth and AJ Fernandez have blended a stick that has decent complexity and the flavor shift throughout. The smoke output was great, the burn was great, and the cigar didn’t need touched up. The bitter note in the final third is what took this stick out of contention for a nine or higher from me.
