Widow Jane 10 Year Old Bourbon

A little background

Widow Jane 10 Year Old Bourbon is crafted in Brooklyn, New York from never more than 5 barrel batches which have been sourced from an undisclosed distillery. It’s then proofed down to 45.5% ABV with pure limestone mineral water from the Rosendale mines and bottled without chill-filtration. Although Widow Jane currently sources their bourbon and rye, they do distill their own spirits and plan to one day make 100% of their own whiskey. Widow Jane 10 Year Old Bourbon has a retail price of around $70.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Burnt Copper

Nose

Orange-lemon citrus, chocolate, grassy mint, and a slight vitamin note.

Palate

Better than average mouthfeel. Dark bitter chocolate, peanuts, toffee, orange, sweet powdered sugar.

Finish

The finish starts off with notes of charred oak that fades quickly into sweet notes of cocoa, orange, and vanilla.

In closing

This is a textbook example of a bourbon that has left so much on the table due to being diluted down. Widow Jane 10 Year has an enjoyable mouthfeel and flavor profile but just falls short, especially for the steep price of $70. Had this been bottled at cask strength, I personally think the experience would be totally different. If you’re looking for an approachable sweet bourbon, Widow Jane 10 Year Bourbon is one you should check out.
