O.H. Ingram River Aged Straight Rye

A little background

O.H. Ingram River Aged Straight Rye from Brown Water Spirits LLC is aged on a floating rickhouse on the riverbank of the Mississippi in Ballard County, KY. According to Ingram “The constant motion of the river ensures that the whiskey never stops working, creating an extraordinary spirit with a taste mature beyond its years.” Due to this method of “hyper-charged” aging, they’ve been able to speed up the aging process requiring less time in the barrel, or so they say. O.H. Ingram River Aged Straight Rye is sourced from Midwest Grain Products (MGP) in Lawrenceburg, IN, aged a minimum of 3 years, is bottled at 98 Proof, and has a retail price of $79.99.

Color

Gold

Nose

Artificial sugar, bubble gum, rye spice, pine, and a green quality.

Palate

Brown sugar, pine, bubble gum, ginger bread, lemon citrus, and rye.

Finish

Marshmallow, vanilla, graham cracker, and cinnamon. Pleasantly long.

In closing

The initial burst of bubble gum was unexpected, unique, and enjoyable. The palate was thick as the the finish was long. Not bad for a 3ish year old rye whiskey! There was an overall lemon meringue quality from the citrus, and toasted marshmallow notes. At around three years old, O.H. Ingram River Aged Straight Rye has had enough time in the barrel to mature nicely and develop some interesting and delicious flavors. Although quite delicious, $80 is quite steep for a rye whiskey of this age. Regardless, it’s worth a try!
