Nikka From the Barrel

A little background

I must preface this review by stating that I have never tasted a Japanese Whisky before, but I have sampled my fair share of different American whiskey styles.  So, with that in mind this review is my effort to best convey my experience with Nikka From the Barrel.  Nikka From the Barrel is from my, admittedly brief, research is a blend of both Malt and Grain whisky distilled from an undisclosed number of distilleries and bottled at 51.4% ABV.  Retail price of around $65.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)

Color

Light Gold

Nose

Slightly Smokey and floral with stewed pears, barley sugar, and sultanas.

Palate

Many of the notes from the nose carry over to the palate with a little more emphasis on the smoke and malt characteristics. Added to those is a honey sweetness and orange zest.

Finish

Medium in length with briny salted caramel.

In closing

I must admit that I enjoyed Nikka From the Barrel more that I anticipated.  The balance of sweet and smoky surprised me since I am still a little sensitive to Peat.  While I am not too experienced Japanese Whisky I can say that I would not turn this down if someone offered to pour me a dram.
