A little background
2026 Discovery from Bardstown Bourbon Company is the 2026 edition of the brand’s Discovery Series, a blend of 7, 10, and 11-year-old bourbons finished for four months in custom-made Garryana oak barrels from Oregon. It is bottled at 112.8 proof (56.4% ABV) and sells for $140. The barrels behind the blend were selected for their balance of fruit and oak, making them well suited to take on the extra structure and sugar of double-barreling.
The blend is made up of three components: 55% 10-year-old bourbon from Indiana (75% corn, 21% wheat, 4% malted barley), 25% 11-year-old bourbon from Kentucky (74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley), and 20% 7-year-old bourbon from Kentucky (74% corn, 16% rye, 10% malted barley). The finishing barrels were made from hand-harvested Garryana oak, also known as Oregon White Oak, which is native to the Pacific Northwest and grows most comfortably in the Willamette Valley. Each barrel was custom-made and hand-toasted for three hours by Oregon Barrel Works. Garryana’s dense grain slows oxidation and evaporation and is known for lending flavors like clove and nutmeg. Summer aging was chosen for maximum extraction, and the whiskey was gradually proofed before bottling. 2026 Discovery is the second Bardstown Bourbon Company release to explore Garryana oak, following the highly limited Distillery Reserve Cascadia. The label features artwork by Margaret Archambault.

In closing
Bardstown Bourbon Company 2026 Discovery is a bourbon that asks for your patience and pays it back. Pour it, then take your time enjoying it. The first sniff brings lemon citrus, caramel, molasses, and brown sugar, but give the glass a few minutes and the nose opens up, adding baking spice, fresh ginger, and oak. The palate is where this one gets interesting: orange citrus and caramel lead into a rhubarb note you rarely find in bourbon, backed by espresso, used tea bag, brown sugar, cinnamon, and dry oak. The finish is long, with orange candy, pepper, and cinnamon giving way to brown sugar, strawberry rhubarb, dry leather, and oak.
Is 2026 Discovery worth $140? Absolutely! You get a 112.8-proof blend of 7, 10, and 11-year-old bourbons, a four-month finish in hand-toasted Garryana oak barrels, and a flavor profile that keeps changing the more time you sit and enjoy it. Treat it like a quick pour and you will miss most of what makes it special. Sit with it, let it breathe, and you get a long, layered bourbon with a super interesting rhubarb character that truly sets it apart.
