Lucky Seven 'The Jokester' 6-Year Bourbon

A little background

Lucky Seven Spirits was co-founded by Michael Lahalih and John Pals, college friends who share a passion for bourbon and cinema, which sets the perfect stage for Lucky Seven Spirits. The Jokester is a small batch, 6-year-old bourbon sourced from unknown distilleries in Kentucky. It is intended to light, yet beautifully balanced and complex, much “like that funny guy that is full of surprises.” This bottle is from batch no. 1 and retails for $75.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Light Honey

Nose

Light ethanol and a slight note of hay greet you initially, but after a few minutes in the glass these fade and the nose opens up to caramel candies, dried cherry, baking spice, dry oak, and a few notes of dried citrus peel.

Palate

The bourbon presents with the sweetness of brown sugar and a nice creamy mouthfeel. As I worked through the sip I also found notes of honey, dried apricot, a very light rye spice, cinnamon, and just a touch of oak.

Finish

The finish is medium-long with a nice viscous mouthfeel. Some spice continue to develop mid-palate, along with more sweet notes, mainly honey and dried red fruit. I also found a prominent note of nutmeg and oak lingering on the back end.

In closing

The Jokester 6-Year Bourbon is exactly what it is intended to be: a relatively light but flavorful and complex bourbon. The nose takes some time to open up past the ethanol and hay notes, but once it does there are plenty of sweet notes that really draw you into the pour. The overall profile starts out somewhat sweet, but there are plenty of spice and oak notes to balance these flavors perfectly. The price tag on this bottle is a little high for my preference, but there is no doubt that this 6-year bourbon has a lot to offer. I also love the packaging and story that accompanies each release from Lucky Seven Spirits.
