A little background

Hardin’s Creek Warehouse Series Release No. 1, known as “The Mushroom,” is part of a three-bottle collection that examines how warehouse architecture influences the character of an otherwise identical bourbon. Distilled at the Jim Beam Distillery and aged for 11 years, this expression is built from the same mash bill used across the series and matured in Warehouse R, a rare, single-story structure with no windows and a consistently cool, low-light environment. By holding every production variable constant except the warehouse itself, the series aims to showcase the direct impact of microclimate, airflow, and structural design on the final whiskey.

The Warehouse Series continues Hardin’s Creek’s broader exploration of American whiskey heritage, following prior releases such as Jacob’s Well, Colonel James B. Beam, and the Kentucky Series. Led by Eighth Generation Master Distiller Freddie Noe, the project highlights the experimental side of the James B. Beam Distilling Co., combining long-standing craftsmanship with conceptual aging studies. “The Mushroom” is bottled at 110 proof (55% ABV), carries an 11-year age statement, and is offered at an MSRP of $150 for a 700ml bottle, contributing to Hardin’s Creek’s lineup of limited and uniquely structured releases.

Color

Dark Gold

Nose

Caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, honey, and oak.

Palate

Sweet caramel, rye spice, new oak, toasted nuts, toasted nuts, and cinnamon.

Finish

Cinnamon, leather, tobacco, rye spice, toasted nuts, white pepper, and dry oak.

In closing

Hardin’s Creek Warehouse Series Release No. 1 “The Mushroom” delivers a straightforward and approachable profile centered on caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and oak, with just enough rye spice and toasted character to keep things lively. The palate leans into its sweet side while the oak influence gradually takes over, leading into a finish marked by cinnamon, tobacco, leather, peppery spice, and drying wood. It’s an enjoyable expression with a compelling warehouse-driven story behind it, though the price and overall simplicity may give some whiskey drinkers pause. For those interested in exploring how environment shapes maturation, “The Mushroom” offers a clear, sweet-leaning example of the concept, pleasant, familiar, and easy to appreciate, even if it doesn’t push into deeper complexity.
