Found North Batch 001 Rye Whisky

A little background

Found North sources distinct barrels from Canada, blending them “to create novel whisky that accentuates rye’s complex and spicy nature”. Their whisky is bottled at cask strength and without chill filtration or any additives. Found North Batch 001 was a 1,327 bottle release of 16-20 year old Rye Whisky that was distilled from 66% Rye, 30% Corn, and 4% Malted Barley.

According to Found North, “we started with herbaceous, 16 year old rye aged in Hungarian oak. We blended in fruit-forward, 17 year old rye aged in ex-Speyside scotch casks. The combination revealed a smoldering symphony of spice. Last, we lengthened the finish and increased the viscosity by adding double-distilled corn whisky aged for 20 years in refill and level-2-char virgin oak.” This whisky was bottled at 57.1% ABV and carries a retail price of $125 USD.

Color

Nose

Tangerines, simple syrup, lemon poppy seed muffins, and lemon pound cake.

Palate

Viscous and rich with layers of graham crackers, chocolate and vanilla. Additional notes of fresh mowed grass, cinnamon, butterscotch, and rye spice.

Finish

Werther’s Original candy early on the finish. Followed by notes of cinnamon, red hots, rye spice, cocoa, and caramel. The finish is sweet and very long lasting.

In closing

Found North Batch 001 is an exceptional rye whisky to say the least. It’s got an incredibly thick viscous body that’s packed full of layers, just like a vanilla and chocolate marble cake! The alcohol on this whisky is dangerously well integrated, making it exceptionally easy to drink. Found North did a fantastic job blending Batch 001, making this a bottle I would absolutely recommend purchasing, especially at the very fair price of $125 USD.
