Dry Fly Cask Strength Wheat Whiskey

A little background

Truthfully, straight wheat whiskey always seems to be hit or miss to me. Products distilled with a mashbill of 100% wheat, such as Dry Fly’s Cask Strength Wheat Whiskey, can really showcase a master distiller’s craft when distilled correctly. Dry Fly Distilling, located in Spokane Washington, has crafted this cask strength straight wheat whiskey from 100% local soft-white wheat. This is the same whiskey as their 90 proof wheat whiskey, just bottled at 120 proof. Dry Fly Cask Strength Wheat Whiskey is aged stated at a minimum of 3 years. The MSRP for this bottle is $50.

(Tasted neat from a Cradle Glass)

Color

Rich Amber

Nose

Heavy dried fruits, refreshing citrus and ethanol notes hit the nose first. After opening up a bit finer notes of honey, vanilla, and a touch of oak come out.

Palate

Peppery wood notes are first to hit the palate, quickly followed by creamy vanilla that coats the entire palate. Lastly, crisp citrus and sweetness of dried fruits hit the back of the palate.

Finish

The finish is long and lingers for a bit of time allowing the smaller notes of oaks, toasted nuts, and light vanilla come through.

In closing

I’ve got to admit, I was truly shocked (and impressed) by Dry Fly’s Cask Strength Wheat Whiskey! It has all the flavors that I long for in a wheated whiskey backed with the spice I like in my drinks. This whiskey is very balanced from the nose to the palate, however I will note that it’s not overly complex. The flavors are what they are, but very enjoyable at that. It’s important to note that this whiskey doesn’t drink like a 120 proof whiskey, it is very smooth and easy to sip. One might even describe it as sweet, which is impressive seeing that it’s cask strength! Dry Fly knows what they are doing with their 100% wheated whiskey and it shows in the flavors of this product. At $50 MSRP, I would pick up another bottle of and could see myself reaching for it often!
