Bulleit rye is sourced from MGP in Indiana, side note: MGP rye is towards the top of my personal favorite whiskey list, so when I saw the TTB label of a 12yr version I was pretty excited. That is until I noticed the lowish proof of 92. I was hesitant to fork over the $55 for a bottle when presented the opportunity but bit the Bulleit and picked one up.
(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)
Color in the glass
Light Copper
Nose
Classic high age MGP nose of salted caramel, green apple, orange, and a slight dill.
Palate
Follows the nose closely with strong caramel with the spicy notes laying a nice foundation, unfortunately a little thin.
Finish
And it is here that the low proof really hurts what could have been great whiskey…the finish is almost non-existent with just a hint of vanilla, oak, and mint.
In closing
Ooooh man this is so close to being great whiskey but comes up short, literally the finish is almost nonexistent. It makes me wonder just how good this could have been if it was in the 100-105 proof range let alone cask strength, but for what it’s worth this is decent whiskey that is not challenging or exciting so if that’s your thing go for it.
