Bourbon 30

A little background

Bourbon 30 is a company based out of Georgetown, Kentucky. Jeff Mattingly founded the company in 2010, and since then has been crafting and selecting barrels to release to the public. Jeff uses his knowledge from the culinary world to finish barrels to people’s likings. At the distillery, people are able to sample whiskey as well as select their own barrel. Bourbon 30 Small Batch is four years old bourbon that’s bottled at 100 proof. It has a suggested retail price of $60.

Color

Spring Honey

Nose

Honey and light black pepper are the two most prominent notes on the nose. A light corn/candy corn note is also noticeable upon a very light nosing. Upon a heavy nosing, notes of corn bread come to the forefront.

Palate

The palate is very nice. The first thing that struck me was the mouthfeel, it is thick and oily, something I was not expecting based upon how light the whiskey is. The second thing that just smacked me silly was the spice. Its like I got a mouthful of barrel aged pepper, but in the best way. It’d make my homemade level 5 spice Chicken Tikka Masala blush! Sweet corn, cream frosting orange peel and underbaked bread all all present once the spice has settled down a bit. This is a very tasty and unique 100 proof whiskey.

Finish

The finish is long. That oily creamed corn taste lingers for a while, as does that incredibly powerful spice. It takes me back to the elote that I had from M2 BBQ in San Antonio (all my Texan/Mexican friends, I see I have your attention now).

In closing

Very well done! This is a darn good whiskey that was blended well and made to be extremely unique. I think given its 4 year age, it delivers in potency of flavors. I would definitely buy this, especially at $60!
