Distillery 291 is a small batch whiskey distillery nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the distillery sits in the shadow of Pikes Peak where owner and founding distiller, Michael Myers has the goal of creating a whiskey that is “rugged, refined, and rebellious.” The mashbill is 69% malted rye and 31% corn, comes in at 101.7 proof, is aged for less than 2 years, and comes with a suggested retail price of $78.99.

Nose
The nose lends itself to notes of pine sap, tree bark, oak, vanilla, cinnamon, and freshly baked break. This whiskey smells like skiing in Colorado as you fly by the trees.
Palate
On the palate there is maple, vanilla, pine, sawdust, rye bread, and oak. This drinks a little bit like a scotch.
Finish
This whiskey has a medium length finish with notes of maple, pine sap, cinnamon, and baking spices.
In closing
Distillery 291 Colorado Small Batch Rye Whiskey is a young whiskey, but those characteristics don’t come through. This is an extremely unique rye that reminds me of walking through a forest in Colorado while it is snowing. I would want a bottle of this on my bar just because of how different it is. I’m excited to see what the distillery has planned for the future.
