Pinhook Bourbon War Vertical Series 4 Year

A little background

The Pinhook Bourbon Vertical Series is a unique way to see how whiskey evolves over time. Pinhook selected a group of 1,350 MGP bourbon barrels with the plan to dump 150 barrels each year, bottling them at varying proofs to create the most balanced expression of the whiskey at that age. The 2019 release of the Pinhook Bourbon War Vertical Series was the inaugural release, which was a 4 Year bourbon that was bottled at 98 Proof. The mash bill consists of 75% Corn, 20.5% Rye, and 4.5% Malted Barley. Pinhook Bourbon War Vertical Series 4 Year has an MSRP of approximately $45 USD.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Old Gold

Nose

Spritzy citrus notes that are light airy and a pleasure on the nose. Lemon-lime, furniture polish (in a good way), key lime, vanilla, and a slight hint of caramel.

Palate

A sweet and smooth classic bourbon palate. Yes, I said “smooth”. More cherry on the palate than the citrus from the nose. Additional hints of sweet vanilla, honey, and confectionary sugar.

Finish

Medium-long finish that’s got great waves of flavor. Honey, caramel, buttery corn, and vanilla.

In closing

Although not the most complex whiskey, Bourbon War 4 Year is still enjoyable and rich with flavor. Sometimes a one-dimensional bourbon is just what the doctor ordered. At just under 100 proof, this is a dangerously sippable bourbon that goes down far too easy! As the first release of the Vertical Series, Pinhook is already out the gate with a bang. I’m truly excited to see what’s in store for future releases in the series.
