A little background

Produced outside of Seattle, Washington, Woodinville whiskey is distilled, bottled, and aged in the Pacific Northwest. Woodinville Port Finish is a 5 year old Washington whiskey that was finished for an additional 6 months in tawny port casks. Sitting at 90 proof, this whiskey can be found at an MSRP of $70.

(Tasted neat from a Halo Glass)

Color

Dark Amber

Nose

The nose is rich and full of notes of candied cherries, a hint of dried mint sprigs on a lighter nosing, plums, light hints of corn, and blackberry syrup. It is very rich, and I can definitely tell it was finished in port casks (in a good way).

Palate

The palate is medium in viscosity. I immediately notice the strong notes that the port presents, which I love. Dark notes of cherry syrup, plums, blackberries, and figs coat the entire palate. There are strong notes of oak spice on the mid palate, as well as corn on the back palate. This is pretty complex!

Finish

The finish is medium-long and carries over the dark notes from the port for a few seconds, then transitions over to oak spice and corn.

In closing

I found Woodinville Port Finished Bourbon to be a very enjoyable glass of whiskey! I am a fan of port-finish whiskies, and for 90 proof this really impressed me. I am glad that Woodinville used moderately-aged whiskey in this, as it needed that complexity boost to taste like something other than corn and port. I would love to try this at barrel proof, I feel like it would be outstanding. Overall, good job!
