Coppercraft Rye Whiskey

A little background

Coppercraft Distillery is located in Holland, Michigan. Founded in 2012, Coppercraft was created as a tribute to the American Craftsman who took pride in the quality of their work. They hope to instill the same heritage from the industrious workers into the production of their spirits. Coppercraft Distillery’s Rye Whiskey is bottled at 90 proof. The small batch rye whiskey is a blend of Coppercraft 2+ year old distillate and sourced rye barrels. All blends are combined, filtered, and aged to bring out unique flavors. The MSRP is $45.

Color

Burnt Honey

Nose

The nose has a predominant butterscotch note when the whiskey enters the glass. Sweet vanilla cream and rye spice round of the nose.

Palate

The sweeter butterscotch notes come out of the first sip. That butterscotch is replaced by a warm mocha flavor. By the third sip, the rye spice becomes the predominant flavor.

Finish

The finish is unique to a rye whiskey, a lingering coffee note sits in the middle of the palate. A quick hint of mocha enters and then the finish is over.

In closing

If you like any amount of coffee notes in your whiskey, then this would be a great whiskey for you to try. I can see this whiskey being popular in cocktails and mixed drinks like manhattans. Personally, I think there are better ryes for the value and would love to have seen this bottled at a higher proof given the $45 price tag. I know that Copperscraft is still young so I will definitely be revisiting them again in a few years. Since this is a small batch rye whiskey, I would be interested in comparing it to some other batches that have been produced.
