Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks

A little background

Angel’s Envy is known for finishing their bourbon in port wine barrels. However, these innovative craftsmen experimented with some of their bourbon by letting it finish in Oloroso Sherry casks. The story goes that a handful of bourbon filled Oloroso Sherry barrels were stored in the rickhouse and forgotten about. When these barrels were rediscovered, 3600 bottles were filled and sold to bourbon drinkers who were anxious to purchase the first release from Angel’s Envy since 2013. This bourbon is NAS but was aged between 4 – 9 years. The bourbon was then finished in the Oloroso Sherry barrels for an additional 2-3 years and bottled at 100 proof. The bottles had to be purchased from the distillery and were $199 MSRP.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Deep Copper

Nose

Rich dark fruit, faint hazelnut, and raisins, and chewing tobacco.

Palate

The first sip was rich and complex with a medium-thick viscosity. The second sip coated and dried the mouth. Vanilla, raisin, and sweet sherry notes were present. The third sip was bright with the same vanilla and raisin notes. However, hints of cherry and blueberry were also present.

Finish

This bourbon had a medium finish which began with intense heat and flavor that quickly faded. Vanilla, cherry, and sherry were most prominent as the finish began to fade.

In conclusion

Angel’s Envy forgotten Oloroso Sherry finished bourbon whiskey is unique. The flavor combination of vanilla, raisins, and cherries will have you reaching for another pour. Bottled at 100 proof and finished in Oloroso Sherry casks will provide desired heat with a velvet soft mouth feel. Due to the limited availability, this may be a once in a lifetime bottle.
