Whiskey Consensus buying guides are expert-researched resources covering the best whiskeys by category, price point, and style. Each guide is grounded in scored reviews from the WC editorial library — no sponsored placements, no brand relationships — and updated as new expressions are released and re-evaluated.
Not every whiskey question has a simple answer — but most have a better one than “just Google it.” These guides cut through the noise: ranked lists, head-to-head comparisons, and deep dives built on real scores from our review library. Whether you’re shopping a budget, settling a debate, or tracking every batch of a single release, start here.
Top-scored rye whiskeys from our review library — ranked by WC score with honest assessments of taste, value, and who each bottle is for.
The best bourbon you can buy without breaking the bank — scored, ranked, and evaluated for quality relative to what you actually pay at retail.
Same distillery, different bottles, different prices. A scored head-to-head breakdown of two of the most debated expressions from Buffalo Trace Distillery.
Every batch scored and tracked — 41 releases across the bourbon and rye lines, with a filterable table, batch code explainer, and top picks by category.
Every guide on Whiskey Consensus is built on scored reviews — not brand relationships, not sponsored placements. Our editorial team evaluates each bottle across five categories: Nose, Palate, Finish, Complexity, and Value. Each category is scored on a 1–10 scale and averaged to produce the final WC Score.
When a bottle appears in a guide, it has earned its place based on score, real-world value, and availability. We don’t include bottles we haven’t reviewed, and we don’t accept payment for placement.
Guides are updated as new bottles are reviewed and as market prices shift. The “Last updated” date at the top of each guide reflects when the content was last meaningfully revised — not just published.

Based on WC scores and retail availability, the best bourbons under $50 include Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101, and Four Roses Small Batch — all scoring above 8.0/10 with strong value marks. See the full ranked list in our Best Bourbons Under $50 guide.
The best rye whiskeys available in 2025–2026 span a wide price range. High-scorers in the WC library include Michter’s Single Barrel Rye, WhistlePig 10 Year, and Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond for value. Full rankings with tasting notes are in our Best Rye Whiskeys guide.
Eagle Rare scores higher in the WC library and has a longer age statement (10 years), but Buffalo Trace offers comparable quality at a lower price point. Whether Eagle Rare is “worth it” depends on availability in your market — it’s significantly harder to find at retail. The full breakdown is in our Eagle Rare vs Buffalo Trace comparison.
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (ECBP) is an uncut, unfiltered bourbon released by Heaven Hill Distillery in three batches per year at varying proofs. Each batch is identified by a four-character code (letter + month + two-digit year). Heaven Hill also releases an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye on a separate schedule. The complete batch history with scores is in our ECBP Complete Guide.
For beginners, approachable bourbons with balanced sweetness and lower proof tend to score well on Value in the WC library. Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, and Four Roses Yellow Label are consistent recommendations — all widely available, under $35, and scored above 7.5/10. The Best Bourbons Under $50 guide is a good starting point.
Every bottle is evaluated across five categories — Nose, Palate, Finish, Complexity, and Value — each scored 1–10. The five scores are averaged to produce the overall WC Score. All reviews are conducted neat from a Glencairn glass. There are no affiliate relationships that influence scores.
