A little background

The Michter’s brand boasts a storied history dating back to 1753 in Pennsylvania. Known variously as Bomberger’s and Pennco, Michter’s gained prominence as a top-selling whiskey in the 1970s and 1980s before declaring bankruptcy in 1989. Revived in the 1990s, Michter’s opened its own distilling facilities in the historic 1890 Fort Nelson building in downtown Louisville in 2019, following an extensive renovation.

Michter’s 10 Year Bourbon is a Single Barrel Bourbon that’s released in limited quantities. Bottled and distilled in Kentucky, this whiskey represents the culmination of over a decade of patient aging in specifically chosen new charred American oak barrels. Michter’s 10-Year Bourbon Single Barrel Bourbon is bottled at 94.4 Proof and carries a retail price of around $185 USD.

In closing

In conclusion, the 2024 release of Michter’s 10-Year Single Barrel Bourbon delivers a complex and decadent tasting experience. The nose features rich notes of butterscotch, toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, raisins, baking spice, oak, and a unique funk. On the palate, the bourbon offers a good mouthfeel with prominent flavors of cinnamon, clove, chocolate, burnt caramel, dates, vanilla, oak, dried cherries, and butter, creating a dark and buttery profile with minimal fruit presence. The medium-long finish is characterized by a lingering funk, dried teabag, cinnamon, clove, black raisins, dates, prominent oak, and a hint of molasses. With its vintage funk and heavy oak influence, this bourbon offers flavors that seem to age beyond its 10 years. However, the 94 proof leaves a bit to be desired, but overall, it’s a complex and intriguing whiskey.
