10th Street American Single Malt Whisky

A little background

10th Street Distillery out of California is an American distillery that produces American Single Malt Whisky. For their whisky they used a peated barley exclusively imported from Scotland, distilled in a pot still with mineral water from the Sierra Mountains. Their distillate is then aged in used bourbon casks for a desired finish. This whisky sits at 92 proof and is available for $65

Nose

The nose, first and foremost, has a strong scent of peat. Which isn’t shocking as the bottle specifically says “Peated”. Citrus notes of pineapple and orange peel come in under the smoke, along with a nutty scent reminiscent of crushed cashews.

Palate

Peat dominates the palate with a slight hint of vanilla and the tang of cracked pecans. As it opens up, very faint notes of red fruit come in at the very front of the palate.

Finish

The finish is medium-long with peat being the absolute dominant factor. Slight vanilla notes play a part, but are largely masked by the peat.

In conclusion

I think this is a very solid whisky for people who enjoy smokey, peat-forward single malts. I love the fact that they used only grains from Scotland, and the peat is delicious. That being said, it was very peat-forward so it did mask some of the other flavors that I would have liked to see. Overall, I thought it was delicious and I would drink it again!
