A little background
William Larue Weller (WLW) is a highly anticipated release from the Buffalo trace Antique Collection. The 2020 WLW was distilled in Winter 2008 and released Fall 2020. Distillers Grade (#1 & #2) Kentucky Corn, North Dakota Wheat, and North Dakota Barley meld together for a unique mash bill. This bourbon aged for 12 years and 6 months at the time of bottling. The barrels rested in warehouses I & C on the 3rd, 5th, and 6th floors and 73% of the original whiskey was lost to evaporation. The 2020 WLW is bottled at 134.5 proof and MSRP is approximately $99.
(Tasted neat from a Denver and Liely Glass)
Color
Cherry Amber
Nose
The nose is rich, deep, and sweet. Cherry and vanilla notes are most prominent. As the spirit opens in the glass, notes of toasted oak and caramel begin to appear.
Palate
The first sip is bold and coats the entire palate with an oily viscosity. Notes of cherry and toasted oak are prominent. The second sip begins with a mouth drying effect that is followed by a Pavlovian response. Cherry, vanilla, Oak, and cinnamon notes concentrate in the mid and back palate. The third sip introduces an interesting combination of caramel and mint notes.
Finish
The finish pleasantly lingers. The palate is enveloped in a concoction of dark fruit, spice, vanilla, and mint notes. As the finish begins to fade, notes of cinnamon begin to appear.
In closing
The 2020 William Larue Weller is special. Do not let the high proof scare you from trying this bourbon. The candy-sweet cherry and vanilla stand out in the nose and palate. The faint mint notes enhance the complexity and will have you reaching out for another pour. The finish lingers and will not disappoint. This bourbon would make an excellent addition to any bar or collection.
Landon. Thanks for this review. I scored this, this year and will be saving it for something special. I’m not new to bourbon, but I am new to networking in bourbon. I’m finding brotherhood though, and I absolutely love that! Kudos on the education field. I am a CRNA, and would like to say thanks for what you do.
