Town Branch Straight Rye Whiskey

A little background

Rye whiskey was originally distilled by President George Washington and was the most popular whiskey until prohibition. Town Branch has revived that spirit, stating that this rye is a style of whiskey with a history as rich as its flavor. The mash bill consists of 55% Rye, 30% Corn, and 15% Malted barley. After aging, the spirit is bottled at 100 proof. MSRP is set at approximately $50.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Light Amber/Brown

Nose

The nose is deep and rich. A toasted dill note is instantly noticeable. Rye and baking spice notes are also present.

Palate

The first sip has a thin to medium viscosity. Notes of toasted oak, char, and worn leather are present. The second sip begins with a burst of rye spice that is followed by hints of bitter oak and barrel char. The third sip begins with notes of baking spice and stale cinnamon. A slight effervescence is also present.

Finish

The finish is long and front palate forward. Cinnamon, oak, and rye spice notes transition into faint hints of chalk candy.

In closing

Town Branch Straight Rye Whiskey has an interesting history. The nose is rich and deep, and the palate boasts notes of toasted oak, rye spice, and cinnamon. The finish is long and pleasant with faint hints of chalk candy. If you are a fan of rye whiskey, then you should find a bottle for your collection.
