A little background

I’m back at it with another Pursuit Series release, this time it’s Episode 007 a 14yr TN bourbon at 110 Proof.  The episode notes state, “Is it fall?  Because I swear I just tasted pumpkin spice latte.”  Retail price of $110 at seelbachs.com with a few bottles left at the time of writing.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)

Color in the glass

Dark Copper

Nose

Maple syrup covered Pecan Spinwheels, banana nut muffins, nutmeg, allspice. Very sweet with an underlying spice that balances out the experience.

Palate

The scents from the nose transition to the palate intact with the spices coming forward a little stronger than they did on the nose. I must admit that I was expecting a little more viscosity on the palate for a 14yr old, but it is by no means thin.

Finish

Now that’s what I’m talking about…the 14 years in the barrel really show on the long vanilla and baking spice finish. Drying sandalwood linger for several pleasant minutes after the sip.

In closing

This barrel is definitely baking spice forward which helps balance out what at times is a cloyingly sweet distillate, so I have to applaud the selection of this barrel on that fact.  I believe I prefer the 14yr Episode 2 but admittedly that barrel is not for everyone and this one has more mass appeal.
