Oak & Eden Round Prairie Rye is a collaborative whiskey in partnership with Jamestown Revival, the popular American rock duet. It starts with an uncut and unaltered rye whiskey. It is then in-bottle finished with a 5” long spiral-cut piece of French Oak. Yes, there is actually a spiral cut piece of wood in the bottle, which is referred to as a “Spire”. This limited whiskey is bottled at 115 Proof and has a retail price of $69.99.
(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)
Color
Dark Copper
Nose
Delicious and classic notes of vanilla, caramel, char, and cinnamon. Deep nosing brings out some egg custard, apples, and butterscotch. The nose is absolutely wonderful with very little alcohol presence.
Palate
Pine, mint, root beer Jolly Ranchers, and butterscotch are the most dominant tasting notes.
Finish
The finish is long lasting and very enjoyable with layers of caramel, vanilla, and pine. Additional notes of smokey mesquite char and toffee are also present.
In closing
Many aspects of this whiskey were not very rye-like, with most of the rye qualities on the palate. The complexity on this whiskey is fantastic and would likely lead you one to believe that it has spent quite a bit of time aging the “traditional way” inside a barrel. I found Round Prairie Rye to be very well balanced and having just the right amount of heat at 115 proof. If given the chance, this would be a fantastic purchase, especially at $70 bucks!
