Kentucky Owl Bourbon Batch 13

A little background

Kentucky Owl Bourbon Batch 13 marks a poignant milestone in the brand’s storied lineup, serving as the final masterful blend crafted by legendary Master Blender John Rhea before his retirement. Released in limited quantities across the U.S. in July 2025, this expression from the Bardstown-based distillery—revived in 2014 after a Prohibition-era hiatus—embodies the art of bourbon blending without rigid parameters. Drawing from five distinct bourbons, primarily 8- and 9-year-old barrels, it blends the rich depth of mature, higher-rye components with the vibrant zest of younger wheated whiskies, resulting in a complex and inviting profile that pays tribute to Rhea’s nearly 50-year career in the industry.

Kentucky Owl Batch 13 is bottled at 113.6 proof (56.8% ABV) and carries a suggested retail of $399 for a 750ml bottle. This limited-edition release is available at select retailers nationwide.

Color

Dark Gold

Nose

Sweet vanilla, caramel, fruit (orange, mango, and peach), molasses, and oak,

Palate

Vanilla custard, brown sugar, citrus fruit (orange and grapefruit), baking spice (cinnamon, all-spice, and black pepper), chocolate, bitter espresso, and oak,

Finish

Vanilla, caramel, chocolate fudge, citrus, citrus, tobacco, baking chocolate, and slightly dry oak.

In closing

Kentucky Owl Bourbon Batch 13 stands as a fitting farewell to Master Blender John Rhea, delivering a harmonious blend that balances rich vanilla, caramel, and citrus with nuanced spice and oak at 113.6 proof. Its inviting nose, layered palate, and lingering, dessert-like finish make it a highly drinkable and complex pour, appealing to both seasoned enthusiasts and casual sippers. However, the steep $399 price tag is going to be a barrier to entry for most. It’s a solid bourbon, but its price tag is extremely high for a for a blend of bourbons aged 4-9 years.
