High West Bourye

A little background

Bourye is bottled at 92 proof and comes in at a retail price of $80. Bourye is released by High West Distillery in Park City, Utah, but the whiskey is a blend of straight bourbons and rye whiskies that are ages a minimum of 10 years and sourced from MGP in Lawrenceburg, IN. The mashbills are: 1. Straight Rye Whiskey: 95% rye, 5% barley malt. 2. Straight Bourbon Whiskey: 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt. 3. Straight Bourbon Whiskey: 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% barley malt. This is a unique blend of whiskies that are non-chill filtered and not carbon treated.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Nose

The nose is fairly complex with notes of vanilla, caramel, rye spice, grape, red apple, candied pear, orange peel, and dark cherry. There is a lot going on!

Palate

The whiskey has a medium viscosity with notes of cinnamon, allspice, rye spice, caramel, vanilla, dark cherry, fig, maple, and mint on the palate. Again, there is a lot going on!

Finish

The offering has a medium finish with notes of cinnamon, clove, allspice, and rye spice that lingers in the background. Notes of caramel and dark cherry are also in the background.

In closing

High West Bourye is a very complex whiskey with a lot going on. Most likely, this is the result of blending older bourbons and ryes together to create this offering. That being said, I would love to have a bottle of this on my bar. It is a whiskey that I could see myself drinking with a bunch of friends in the backyard next to a campfire. The retail price is $80 with this one, but I believe the finished product justifies the cost in this case.
