Elijah Craig Barrel Select

A little background

Elijah Craig Barrel Select (Grenade) can be found exclusively at the Heaven Hill Heritage Center in Bardstown, Ky. The product has No AGe Statement (NAS) and is bottled at 125 proof. (Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Medium Amber

Nose

The nose is alcohol forward with notes similar to the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof offerings. Aromas of toasted vanilla, caramel, and oak are present.

Palate

The first sip is thin and underwhelming. The high proof is briefly evident on the tip of the tongue, but quickly fades. Slight heat is noted in the back palate. The second sip is accompanied by a flash of heat on the front and sides of the tongue. Faint notes of oak and vanilla are present. The third sip seems to have more heat than flavor. Faint notes of oak are accompanied by effervescent alcohol.

Finish

The finish is hot and short-lived. The alcohol and heat from the bourbon are overwhelming. This combination is not pleasant.

In conclusion

The Barrel Select “Hand Grenade” may be more of a show piece than an easy sipper. The high proof is evident with every sip. The traditional bourbon flavors that pair well with high proof heat are missing. The mouth feel is thin and disappointing. The aesthetics of this bottle are ideal. However, the mouth feel and taste leave something to be desired.
