A little background
Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon from Conecuh Ridge Distillery bears the name of the man responsible for the brand, Clyde May. Clyde crafted his first spirits in 1946, but it wasn’t until 2001 that the distilling operation was made legal. The company built its name around their popular “Alabama Style Whiskey”, which according to their website is finished with a hint of apple. Clyde May’s portfolio has now expanded beyond the category of Alabama Style Whiskey, including both a bourbon and a rye whiskey. Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon is bottled at 92 proof and has a retail price of about $40 bucks for a 750ml. According to their website it’s aged somewhere around 4 to 5 years.
(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)
Color
Medium Gold
Nose
Light with traces of peaches, apricot and brown sugar.
Palate
Sweet notes of brown sugar, caramel, cherries, and baking spice spices (nutmeg, cinnamon and clove). The flavors are nicely balanced.
Finish
Spices begin to dominate with allspice and nutmeg joining the party. Vanilla bean also shows up. The finish is pleasantly long and enjoyable.
In closing
Simply put, I like this bourbon. I will admit that I would like to see the proof a little higher than 92, but that’s just me. This bottle sticks out as a very well balanced bourbon that’s worth exploring, especially because of its availability. Next time you’re staring at the liquor store shelf wondering what to buy, grab a bottle of Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon. I’m confident that you’ll be happy with your purchase.
