Blue Spot Single Pot Still Cask Strength Irish Whiskey

A little background

Blue Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey gets its name from the Mitchell’s practice of marking their maturing casks of whiskey with a mark or daub of colored paint to determine the age potential of the whiskey. Blue Spot was a 7 year old whiskey, green spot (10 year old), Yellow Spot (12 year old), and Red Spot (15 year old). This whiskey is matured for at least 7 years in Bourbon Barrels, Sherry Butts, and Madeira Casks. Blue Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is bottled at cask strength (117.4 Proof) and carries a retail price of $95 USD.

Color

Dark Gold

Nose

Sweet oranges, mango, simple syrup, lemon zest, and toasted nuts.

Palate

Orange zest, honey, bitters, baking spice, caramel, and a touch of chocolate. This whiskey coats the mouth very well!

Finish

Enjoyably long with notes of chocolate, fruits, baking spice, and toasted wood.

In closing

Overall, Blue Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey delivers a beautiful mix of sweet and spice that’s dangerously drinkable at cask strength. The palate is rich and oily, leaving the palate coated in wonderful flavors for an enjoyably long finish. Experiencing Irish Whiskey at cask strength is a real treat and takes the whole tasting experience to another level. Although this whiskey is wonderful, I do find it to be priced on the high end for a 7 year old whiskey, even if it is cask strength.
