Mic Drop 3.0 4-Year

A little background

Mic Drop 3.0 L19-01 is bottled at 112.2 proof and comes in at a retail of around $60. It was distilled by MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on May 23rd 2015 and bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky in July 2019. Mic Drop 3.0 has a mash bill of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley. It’s been aged 4 years and is unique in that is it the 3rd release of the Mic Drop project from PM Spirits. This bourbon is barrel proof, unfiltered, and comes from a batch of 37 barrels.

Honey

Nose

The nose on this bourbon was pleasant at first with notes of vanilla, cinnamon candy, overly ripe fruits, caramel, honey, and coconut. However, there is an off-putting note that is prevalent that I could best describe as a bar of Ivory Spring soap.

Palate

The palate starts off with a nice blend of allspice and rye spice and then transitions to cinnamon candy, baked apple, and peanut. Once again though, the ivory soap note is present and really takes away from some of the other great notes. This bourbon has a medium viscosity and coats the tongue but not the entire palate. When water is added, the nose becomes sweeter, caramel becomes more prevalent on the palate, and the finish disappears.

Finish

The finish is short but has a heat that lingers in your throat and really doesn’t add to the flavor. The notes that are prevalent on the finish are spearmint, cinnamon candy, and ivory spring soap.

In conclusion

This is not a bad bourbon, but it is not something I would personally reach for due to the overwhelming soap notes I get on the nose, palate, and finish. Also, if you have had Mic Drop 1 and Mic Drop 2, this is going to be a major letdown. Granted this is a 4 year spirit while the others were much older. At the $60 price point this may be a bourbon that would be a good talking point due to the name; however, there are much better products out there for the price. With that being said, this will be a coveted product that bourbon lovers will want on their bar but in my opinion, not for the bourbon inside.
