Redbreast Lustau

A little background

Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is distilled at Midleton Distillery located in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland which also produces Jameson and Tullamore Dew. Redbreast Lustau is aged 9 to 12 years and uses a malted barley mash as well as an unmalted barley mash. The whiskey is 92 proof, non-chill filtered, and is triple distilled in copper pot stills. It is matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks (first-fill sherry butts seasoned with Bodegas Lustau sherry) and is a blended whiskey that comes in at a price of around $65. This product is a limited edition release.

Color

Mocha

Nose

The nose is full of caramel and butterscotch that is followed by fig, toasted oak, and a confectionary sugar note.

Palate

The sherry really shines through on the palate with notes of fig and licorice to go along with a caramel sweetness and bright green apple.

Finish

Redbreast Lustau is a whiskey with a medium finish that has notes of sherry, green apple, and caramel that carry over from the palate.

In closing

Redbreast Lustau is a solid whiskey that has a lot of traditional bourbon notes of the nose combined with a lot of traditional Irish whiskey and scotch notes of the palate and finish. I would recommend this for a bourbon drinker that is trying to explore the Irish whiskey category or an Irish whiskey drinker that wants a good pour that is a little outside of the box.
