Heigold is Rabbit Hole’s take on a High Rye Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. It has a mashbill of 70% corn, 25% Malted Rye, and 5% Malted Barley. This whiskey entered the barrel at 110 proof, which is lower than most distilleries entry proof. Heigold is aged for a minimum of 3 years in level 3 charred barrels. According to Rabbit Hole, Heigold is a small-batch bourbon made from 15 or fewer barrels. The proof on Rabbit Hole Heigold is 95 and the MSRP is $69.99.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Caramel

Nose

Sweet toasted malt and oak are the first notes to jump out of the glass. After opening up a bit, caramel, floral, and dried fruit notes come through.

Palate

A light rye spice is present on the palate, but quickly overtaken by a very sweet butterscotch note. Subtle citrus flavors are present, but not dominant.

Finish

The finish is short, with a bit of spice from the rye lingering around. Small hints of woodiness can be found throughout the finish as well, but it’s the sweetness of this bourbon that really sticks around.

In conclusion

Rabbit Hole Heigold is a very enjoyable bourbon considering the fact that it has only spent about three years in a barrel. There is a good balance of flavor between the nose and palate. The only downside would be the overpowering sweet notes on the palate. Overall, this is a good option for a high rye bourbon!
