Powers Three Swallow Irish Whiskey

A little background

Powers Three Swallow Irish Whiskey is a modern expression of what the original Powers whiskey tasted like and pays homage to the Powers family coachman and their stable of horses. According to Powers, in the winter months, each of their three coachmen would each take a sip from their hip flask to keep warm. Powers Three Swallow is made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills. This whiskey is non-chill filleted, bottled at 86.4, and has a retail price of around $50 USD.

Color

Dark Gold

Nose

Honey, marshmallow, lemon, nutmeg, and malt. Light and pleasant.

Palate

Cinnamon, nutmeg, honeycomb, cocoa, sweet lemon, and a burst of spice. Rich and oily texture.

Finish

A lingering sweetened, along with some spice, butterscotch, and vanilla.

In closing

Powers Three Swallow is a classic Irish Whiskey that’s available at a very fair price. This whiskey is packed full of sweet notes of honey and citrus, while still offering other interesting flavors of nutmeg and butterscotch. Given the low proof, I was pleased to find nice body and viscosity on the palate. For the price and quality of the whiskey, I feel that Powers Three Swallow Irish Whiskey really sets the bar. If you’re looking to pick up a bottle of Irish Whiskey and want to try something other than Jameson or Redbreast, I highly encourage you to give Powers Three Swallow a try.
