Old Overholt 114 Proof Special Release Straight Rye Whiskey

A little background

Old Overholt 114 proof is an Ohio only special release paying Tribute to the home of the industrial revolution and the history the state has with the Old Overholt brand. According to Old Overholt, “this whiskey pays tribute to our ryes produced during the Prohibition Era. Non-Chill Filtering helps retail a naturally full and robust flavor profile. And cut to 114 proof, it is historically rooted in traditional maturation barrel strength of the time”. Old Overholt 114 proof is a Kentucky made 4 Year Straight Rye Whiskey that carries a retail price of $30.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Deep Copper

Nose

Loads of caramel, vanilla, and marshmallows. Pleasant aromas of oak, butterscotch, tangerines, and a macadamia nuttiness.

Palate

Graham cracker, toffee, Pine-Sol, dried cherries, and more nuttiness. Light cinnamon, with good richness and a pleasant mouthfeel.

Finish

A pleasantly long finish with nice waves of flavor. Honey butter, cinnamon, and a slight beam of citrus stick around the longest.

In closing

A very enjoyable experience from the nose all the way through to the finish. This is a bourbon drinkers rye in that it doesn’t have any overwhelming rye notes and drinks more like a bourbon. Despite being bottled at 114 proof, it’s quite tame and very approachable. I really enjoyed the unique tangerine notes on the nose and the great mouthfeel on the palate and finish. At $30, this whiskey is an absolute value and certainly something I’m happy to have on my shelf.

In what world is Ohio the home of the Industrial Revolution? This article starts off with a few ridiculous statements and quotes straight from the Beam marketing brochure. That being said this whiskey sounds excellent, and the review is very helpful.
