A little background
Michter’s, a name steeped in American whiskey history, traces its origins to 1753 when John Shenk established a distillery in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, making it the nation’s first whiskey company. Initially known as Shenk’s and later Bomberger’s, the distillery crafted rye whiskey from local grains, with a legacy tied to supplying George Washington’s troops at Valley Forge. After enduring Prohibition, financial struggles, and bankruptcy in 1989, Michter’s was revived in the 1990s by Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman in Kentucky, where it now operates three facilities: the Shively distillery in Louisville, the Fort Nelson Building, and a 205-acre farm in Springfield, Kentucky.
Michter’s Cask Strength Rye Whiskey is a single barrel limited release, showcasing the brand’s commitment to quality. For 2025, this rye whiskey is bottled at proofs ranging from 107.4 to 115.2, with the bottle reviewed here at 110.2 proof. The mash bill for this release is undisclosed, adding an element of intrigue to its character. Priced around $100-$150 depending on the market, it reflects Michter’s dedication to crafting high-quality, small-batch spirits in the heart of Kentucky’s whiskey country.
