The bottle we reviewed was bottled at 111.2 proof (55.6% ABV) for this 2026 release, with individual bottles ranging from 110.4 to 112.6 proof depending on the barrel, it carries a suggested retail price of $119.99 per 750ml. The mash bill is not publicly disclosed, but Michter’s is clear that the grain selection falls somewhere between bourbon and rye territory — distinct enough that it legally qualifies as neither, which is exactly what makes sour mash whiskey its own category.
The Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash starts life barreled at 103 proof in toasted and fire-charred new American white oak, then aged to peak maturity as determined by Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson before being batched uncut and run through Michter’s signature filtration protocol. Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco has noted that sour mash was actually the most popular whiskey the brand produced back in its Pennsylvania era during the 1970s and 80s, which gives this release a certain legacy weight. At the end of the day, Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash (2026) is an exceptionally good whiskey that earns its premium positioning. The nose opens with inviting layers of caramel, cereal grain, cinnamon, stone fruit, and cocoa — classic sour mash character with real depth. The palate delivers on that promise with honey, maple syrup, cherry, baking spice, and more cocoa, all wrapped in a full-bodied, well-coated mouthfeel that feels substantial without being heavy. The finish brings honey and cocoa back around, joined by a bright lemon citrus note, some barrel funk, and a lingering spice. Fair warning: there is noticeable heat here, particularly on the palate and through the finish — which is a bit surprising given that 111.2 proof isn’t extreme territory. It’s not unpleasant heat, but it’s present enough to notice. What’s most impressive is how much this release improves on the already solid standard US*1 Sour Mash — the barrel strength format unlocks a richness and complexity that the 86-proof version simply can’t deliver. At $119.99, the Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash sits in a competitive price band, but it holds its own confidently. For fans of the original or anyone who appreciates a distinctive, hard-to-categorize American whiskey with real craft behind it, this one is well worth seeking out.
