Mavericks Doublewood Small Batch American Whiskey

A little background

Located in Beverly Hills, California, Cali Distillery started out as a way to share whiskey with friends and has since turned into a full-blown distillery. All of their whiskey is made in small batches and some are considered limited releases. Their Mavericks Doublewood Small Batch whiskey is a high rye finished whiskey. First, the whiskey is aged in new American Oak barrels before being finished in toasted French Oak. Mavericks Doublewood Small Batch American Whiskey has a suggested retail price of $30.

Color

Mahogany

Nose

The nose is full of aromas of coffee, cocoa, and toasted nuts. Slight notes of tobacco, toasted cedar, and peanut butter began to come through as the whiskey opens up.

Palate

Fresh earthy spices were the first thing to hit the palate. Butterscotches notes were followed closely behind the spices. Finishing the whiskey in toasted French oak, allowed for notes like toasted walnuts and sweet vanilla.

Finish

The finish was short and sweet. It overcomes the palate with dried fruits in a good way.

In closing

Not bad! The nose took me by surprise with the aroma of coffee and peanut butter, but not in an off putting way. It was nice because it was not at all artificial. I found Mavericks Doublewood to benefit from a little extra time in the glass to open up a bit. Once it opens up the peanut butter notes go down and the rich cocoa flavors come out. The only downside to the whiskey is the sweetness, as it’s almost cloyingly sweet. The sweetness does make it very easy to drink and some might find that as a good quality. For $30 this is a pretty darn good whiskey and great into into the world of double barreled whiskies.
